Young and clam or what will remain a secret from the patient forever
The Young and Calm series introduces the public to the hidden world of the operating room—a realm patients glimpse only briefly before the induction of anesthesia.
Jana Stross's black-and-white photographs capture the team's intense concentration, the tension, and the humanity concealed behind surgical masks and caps.
In this series, the photographer focuses on younger surgeons and perioperative nurses who are gradually taking up the professional baton of the surgical craft from their senior colleagues.
The project does not merely showcase doctors; it gives a powerful voice to perioperative nurses, without whom no procedure could take place.
She received the Olomouc Regional Museum Award for the image Young and Calm 2 at the NASFO 2026 National Photography Competition.
Following the exhibition series, the photograph will be added to the Union of Czech Photographers Collection at the National Archives of the Czech Republic.
